Team Profile

The Sint Maarten Soccer Association became a full Concacaf member in 2013 and have faced difficult moments, including problems with facilities in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma in 2017.

Yet, officials and players have pressed on, and while Sint Maarten’s men’s national team will once again compete in League C of the Concacaf Nations League, looking for its first point in the tournament, it has shown plenty of resilience.

The 2019-20 campaign was not without bright spots, either. Two of Sint Maarten’s four losses came down to just one goal, with Billy Forbes’ 93rd-minute winner for Turks and Caicos Islands a particularly back-breaking moment.

Sint Maarten also fought back, cutting the gap to a goal in a 2-1 loss to Guadeloupe, which ended up topping the group and earning promotion to League B.

The tournament also showed there is talent in the pipeline. Forward Gerwin “Smally” Lake scored in each of four matches, racking up five goals in the tournament.

He later participated in the Caribbean Club Championship, a path embarked upon after participating in a tryout in the Netherlands looking for talent eligible to represent Sint Maarten. There may be more on the way, and perhaps several results to celebrate in the future as well.
