Team Profile

Two-time qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup, El Salvador has a rich soccer history that it is looking to recapture as it looks toward a bright future.

El Salvador will anticipate playing in League A of the Concacaf Nations League for the first time in 2022 after winning promotion from League B with five wins and a loss. The finish at the top of the group also put La Selecta into the Concacaf Gold Cup for the 12th time in 2021, in which they won two group stage matches for the first time in their history.

Their best finish in a Concacaf Championship came in 1981 when they finished in second during the golden era of Salvadoran football. After appearing in the 1970 FIFA World Cup, El Salvador was back in 1982 as one of only two Concacaf nations in Spain.

In addition to the men’s domestic league featuring stalwarts such as former Concacaf champions Alianza, Aguila and FAS, the Salvadoran Football Federation also launched a women’s league in 2010, which has helped fuel the women’s national team in its quest to make the W Championship for the first time.

El Salvador also has a proud history of success in beach soccer, twice winning the Concacaf title.
