CS Herediano and CD Marathón begin their Group B campaigns at the 2026 Central American Cup

ALAJUELA, Costa Rica – The 2026 Concacaf Central American Cup continues with CS Herediano taking on CD Marathón in Group B on Thursday at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, Costa Rica.

The occasion presents the third matchup between the sides in their history after they clashed in the first round of the 1980 edition of the Concacaf Champions Cup. The first leg saw Marathón claim a 3-nil victory, followed by a 3-1 win for Herediano in the return fixture, with Marathón winning 4-3 on aggregate.

CS Herediano returns for a fourth consecutive edition after booking its spot as the second-best team in the aggregate table during Costa Rica's Liga Promerica 2025-26 season. Los Florenses possess an 8-10-2 record in tournament play and have reached the Semifinals in both 2023 and 2024.

Marathón are back for a second appearance after competing in the 2024 edition. The Honduran club finished its inaugural campaign with a 2-0-2 record and will be looking to advance beyond the Group Stage for the first time.

Pre-match Stats

  • CS Herediano will make their fourth consecutive Concacaf Central American Cup appearance, having featured in every edition of the tournament. Los Florenses reached the Semifinals in two of their first three campaigns, doing so in 2023 and 2024.
  • CD Marathón return for their second Concacaf Central American Cup campaign after making their tournament debut in 2024. The Honduran side finished with a 2-0-2 record, falling in the Group Stage after winning two of their four matches.
  • Herediano remain unbeaten at home in the Concacaf Central American Cup, posting a 4-4-0 record across eight home matches. However, Los Florenses have won just one of their last five home fixtures in the competition (W1 D4).
  • Marathón will look to become just the second Honduran club to earn an away victory in Costa Rica in Concacaf Central American Cup play. Honduran clubs have posted a 4D-7L record away to Costa Rican opposition, with Olimpia's 3-2 win over Alajuelense in 2023 standing as the lone victory.
