USA Reaches Round of 16

USA advances to the Round of 16 in the Knockout Round at the FIFA World Cup 2026

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The FIFA World Cup 2026 continued with the United States of America earning a 2-0 victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 on Wednesday at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara, California, USA.

USA goalkeeper Matt Freese opened the match with two key interventions. First, stopping Ermedin Demirović’s attempt in the 10’, before palming out a corner kick opportunity in the 11’.

Folarin Balogun opened the scoring in the 45’ to place the hosts in the lead. USA’s high press saw the team recover possession by the halfway line, before Malik Tillman’s attempted pass was deflected into Balogun’s path, where he slotted the ball at the back of the net with a left-footed finish.

The Stars and Stripes were left with ten men in the second half when Balogun was shown a red card in the 64’.

Tilman doubled USA’s lead from a free-kick in the 82’ to round out the result.

Freese had a standout performance in goal for USA, making three saves and recording a second clean sheet this FIFA World Cup.

The result sees the USA seal a spot in the Round of 16, where it will face Belgium on July 6, 8:00 PM ET (5:00 PM local), at Seattle Stadium in Seattle, Washington, USA.

United States vs Bosnia and Herzegovina – Post-Match Facts

  • Concacaf has three teams in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup—Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The Confederation had previously achieved this feat only once, in 2014, when the United States, Mexico, and Costa Rica all reached the knockout stage.
  • The United States has won a FIFA World Cup knockout-stage match for only the second time in its history, following its 2-0 victory over Mexico in the Round of 16 at Korea/Japan 2002. Prior to tonight, that was also the only knockout match in which the U.S. both led and kept a clean sheet.
  • The United States became just the third Concacaf nation to defeat a European opponent outright in a FIFA World Cup knockout-stage match (excluding penalty shootouts), joining Mexico, which defeated Bulgaria in 1986, and Cuba, which beat Romania in 1938.
  • This was the United States’ third victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, its highest win total in a single edition of the tournament.
  • Malik Tillman became just the second U.S. player since detailed records began in 1966 to score directly from a free kick at a FIFA World Cup, joining Eric Wynalda, who accomplished the feat against Switzerland in 1994.
  • The United States has now scored four goals from set-piece situations at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including Tillman’s direct free-kick strike, the most by any team in the tournament.
  • The United States has scored seven first-half goals at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the highest total of any nation, ahead of Brazil (6). It also marks the first time the Americans have scored before halftime in four consecutive FIFA World Cup matches.
  • Folarin Balogun became just the third U.S. player to score three or more goals in a single FIFA World Cup, joining Bert Patenaude (4 in 1930) and Landon Donovan (3 in 2010).
  • Balogun also became only the fourth player in FIFA World Cup history to score and be sent off in the same knockout-stage match, following Garrincha (1962 semifinal), Ronaldinho (2002 quarterfinal), and Zinedine Zidane (2006 final).
  • Weston McKennie completed five defensive line-breaking passes against Bosnia and Herzegovina, bringing his tournament total to 13—four more than any other player at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
