Three Concacaf Teams Win Knockout Matches at the Same World Cup

Canada, Mexico and the United States all won their Round of 32 matches, marking the first time three Concacaf teams have won knockout matches at the same FIFA World Cup.

Canada Achieves Best World Cup Finish in Nation’s History

Stephen Eustáquio delivered Canada's first FIFA World Cup knockout victory. Eustáquio scored in the 90'+2' of the 1-0 victory against South Africa in the Round of 32.

Canada's historic campaign ended with a 3-0 defeat to Morocco in the Round of 16. Against Morocco, Canada fielded its youngest World Cup starting lineup since 1986, with an average age of 26 years and 347 days.

Mexico Wins First Knockout Match in 40 Years

After being unable to get past the Group Stage in 2022, Mexico returned to the Knockout Stage after opening the tournament with a perfect 3-0-0 record.

El Tricolor won 2-0 against Ecuador in the Round of 32 to earn Mexico’s first knockout victory at the World Cup since 1986. Julián Quiñones scored in the 22’ and assisted Raúl Jiménez in the 31’ as Mexico became the first Concacaf nation to defeat a CONMEBOL country in a World Cup knockout match. Mexico also kept four straight clean sheets while scoring eight goals.

Mexico’s run ended in a 3-2 classic against England in the Round of 16. Quiñones joined Mexico's World Cup elite after scoring against England, equaling Javier Hernández and Luis Hernández as the nation's joint-leading FIFA World Cup scorer with four goals. Quiñones also reached five direct goal involvements, level with Javier Hernández, Rafael Márquez and Cuauhtémoc Blanco for the most by a Mexican player.

United States Wins First Knockout Match in 24 Years

The United States topped its group before defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in the Round of 32 to reach a second consecutive Round of 16. Folarin Balogun and Malik Tillman provided the goals, securing the nation's first FIFA World Cup knockout victory since 2002.

The Stars and Stripes ended their run with a 4-1 loss to Belgium in the Round of 16. Malik Tillman became the second player on record since 1966 to score two direct free kicks in a single World Cup, after France’s Bernard Genghini in 1982.
