Mexico meets Ecuador in World Cup Round of 3

Mexico faces Ecuador for a Round of 16 spot after a perfect Group Stage.

MEXICO CITY – The FIFA World Cup 2026 continues with Mexico facing Ecuador in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, 9:00 PM ET (7:00 PM local), at Mexico City Stadium in Mexico City, Mexico.

Javier Aguirre's team will be looking to continue its strong tournament run in the Knockout Round after completing a perfect Group Stage for the first time ever.

Mexico topped Group A with three wins and zero goals conceded. Javier Aguirre’s squad defeated South Africa, 2-nil, in the opener, followed by a 1-nil win over Korea Republic, and a 3-nil victory over Czechia.

Julián Quiñones was the standout man on offense, scoring in two of the three matches, to lead the way for Mexico. The last Mexican player to score twice in a single World Cup edition was Javier Hernández at South Africa 2010. Only Luis Hernández, with four goals at France 1998, has scored more for Mexico in a single FIFA World Cup.

Raúl Rangel has led the defense with three clean sheets. Mexico has now gone 14 consecutive FIFA World Cup matches without conceding a first-half goal, a streak dating back to the start of Brazil 2014.

Ecuador qualified for the Knockout Round as one of the best third-place teams and is coming off an emotional 2-1 win over Germany to advance. Nilson Angulo and Gonzalo Plata scored the goals for the Ecuadorians.

Mexico vs Ecuador Game Notes

• Mexico and Ecuador have faced once before at the FIFA World Cup, with El Tri winning 2-1 in a group match in 2002. In all competitions, the two nations have drawn each of their last three meetings.
• Mexico have won just one of their 14 FIFA World Cup matches against South American sides (D3 L10) – although that was their only game versus Ecuador in 2002 (2-1). In fact, that game was also Ecuador’s only World Cup defeat to a Concacaf side in four matches (W2 D1).
• This is the 10th time Mexico have reached the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup – they’ve been eliminated at the first hurdle in eight of their previous nine attempts, progressing only from a round of 16 tie against Bulgaria in 1986.

• Mexico conceded 1.51 expected goals during the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage, the third-lowest figure in the competition behind only Japan (1.48) and Spain (0.54).
• Julián Quiñones scored in two of Mexico’s three 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage, while he led all Mexican players for shots (10) and shots on target (4). The only Mexico player to score in three games in a single World Cup is Luis Hernández in 1998.
