David hat-trick secures Canada’s first World Cup win
Canada secured their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory, a 6-nil over Qatar.
VANCOUVER, Canada – The FIFA World Cup 2026 continued with Canada earning a 6-nil win against Qatar on Thursday at BC Place Vancouver in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
The result marked the first ever victory for Canada in a FIFA World Cup match. It also marked the biggest margin of victory by a Concacaf nation in the tournament’s history.
The victory gives Canada the lead in Group B with one game to play in the Group Stage. This result is also historical for Concacaf, as it marks the first time a nation from the region scores six goals in a World Cup match.
Cyle Larin scored for a second consecutive match to open the scoring in the 16’ for Canada.
Jonathan David extended the lead in the 29’, scoring his 40th goal for Canada. David secured a brace, the first ever scored by a Canadian male in a World Cup match, in the 45’+3’.
Nathan Saliba scored the fourth goal for Canada in the 64’, sending the ball to the bottom of the net with a right-footed free kick.
An own goal by Mohamed Mannai in the 75’ put the hosts up by five.
David closed the match by completing his hat-trick in the 90’+2’, becoming the first Canadian to score three goals in a men’s FIFA World Cup match.
Qatar saw two players receive red cards, Homam Ahmed in the 33’ and Assim Madibo in the 51’.
Canada’s final group encounter will take place against Switzerland on Wednesday, June 24, 3:00 PM ET (12:00 PM local) at BC Place Vancouver.

- Jonathan David became the first player representing a Concacaf nation to score a hat-trick in a FIFA World Cup match since Bert Patenaude achieved the feat for the United States against Paraguay in 1930.
- Canada recorded eight shots on target in the first half, the joint-most by any team in the opening 45 minutes of a FIFA World Cup match since Romania also registered eight against Argentina in 1994.
- Canada became the only Concacaf team to record more than 10 shots from inside the box in the first half of a FIFA World Cup match since at least 1966, doing so twice: against Belgium in 2022 (12) and against Qatar today (11).
- Jonathan David became just the third player representing a Concacaf nation to score multiple first-half goals in a FIFA World Cup match, joining Bert Patenaude of the United States in 1930 and Folarin Balogun in 2026.
- Nathan Saliba’s strike was the first direct free-kick goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It was also only the fourth direct free-kick goal scored by a Concacaf player at the tournament since 1966, following Eric Wynalda (USA, 1994), Ronald Gómez (Costa Rica, 2006), and Luis Chávez (Mexico, 2022).
- Canada became the first team to record more than 90 touches in the opposition penalty area in a FIFA World Cup match since at least 1966, finishing with 97.
- Canada ended the match with 10 shots on target, more than double their previous single-match FIFA World Cup record of four.
