Mexico wins on eConcacaf debut

Mexico defeats Costa Rica to claim champions honors in eFootball Mobile.

MEXICO CITY - The inaugural FIFAe Continental Championship North, Central America, and Caribbean by eConcacaf kiced off on Friday with the eFootball™ Mobile tournament, with Mexico claiming the win and qualifying to the FIFAe Finals.

The eFootball™ Mobile tournament saw Mexico, Guyana, Costa Rica, Trinidad & Tobago, Panama, and the Dominican Republic compete for the title in the thrilling first day of competition in Mexico City, with Mexico ultimately clinching the title. Below let’s review the tournament’s results.

Group Stage

The eFootball™ Mobile tournament kicked off with the Group Stage in which participants faced each opponent once, with four teams advancing to the Knockout Stage.

Mexico led the standings with 15 points after winning its five games with an impressive offensive performance, scoring 12 goals and conceding just once. Guyana followed with eight points, Costa Rica was third with seven points, and Trinidad & Tobago claimed fourth place with six points.

Knockout Stage

Knockout Stage matchups consisted of two games, with a third game with Golden Goal if needed in case of a tie.

Mexico began by defeating Trinidad & Tobago in dramatic fashion, with a free kick winner in the 90+1’ of the second game after a 0-0 tie in game one. Guyana topped Costa Rica, with a goalless draw followed by a 1-0 victory.

Mexico and Guyana subsequently faced off for a place in the Final. After a 1-1 draw in game one, Mexico prevailed with a 2-1 result to secure its place in the Final.

Losing teams still had a second chance to be in the Final. Costa Rica defeated Trinidad & Tobago in a matchup of the losers, which gave the Ticos the opportunity to face Guyana. The Ticos then took revenge from the first matchup against Guyana, with a 1-1 tie in the first game and a 1-0 victory to advance to the Final.

Final

Mexico and Costa Rica took center stage in the final as they battled it out for the big prize. Game one of the series resulted in a 1-1 draw, with Costa Rica opening the scoring and Mexico equalizing shortly after.

Game two was everything that can be expected in a Final. Costa Rica missed a penalty after a foul that also cost Mexico a red card. With 10 players, the Mexican side dominated in possession and controlled the tempo. Mexico then scored twice to secure a 2-0 victory and win the first ever FIFA eContinental Championship by eConcacaf title and secure a spot in the coming FIFAe Finals.

Venue

The first edition of the FIFAe Continental Championship North, Central America, and Caribbean by eConcacaf will be hosted in Mexico City, Mexico at Gamergy, one of the region’s leading gaming and esports events, which attracts more than 80,000 attendees throughout the weekend. Hosting the event within Gamergy will provide a dynamic setting for elite competition, fan engagement, and live esports entertainment.
