MIAMI, Florida – As announced by Concacaf on Thursday, the 2020 Concacaf Nations League Finals will be played June 3-6, 2021 at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado.
The Mile High City has left its fair share of indelible images in Concacaf history, including these five memorable matches.
2019 Gold Cup: Guardado’s historic night
Mexico squared off against Canada at Empower Field at Mile High in the group stage of the 2019 Gold Cup with MF Andres Guardado on the bench, but by the end of the night the veteran had made history after scoring two goals in a 3-1 Mexico victory. Guardado notched goals in the 54’ and 77’ to bring his all-time Gold Cup total to 12 goals, tying the mark set previously by Zague for most Gold Cup goals scored by a Mexican player.
2013 Concacaf World Cup Qualifying: U.S. down Costa Rica in blizzard
The second match in the final round of Concacaf World Cup Qualifying for Brazil 2014 saw the United States meet Costa Rica at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in the Denver suburb of Commerce City in March of 2013. After a 2-1 defeat at Honduras in their first outing, the U.S. were in need of a full three points. What they were not expecting though was for that first win to come amid a blizzard. With snow pelting down throughout, a first half Clint Dempsey goal would hold up for the remainder to give the U.S. a 1-0 victory.
2018 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League: Toronto FC tops Colorado in frigid temps
The 2018 SCCL kicked off in late February of 2018 with MLS sides Colorado rapids and Toronto FC doing battle at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Weather would once again play a big factor. When the two sides kicked off, the temperature read a frigid 3 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the coldest SCCL match in history. Second half goals from Jonathan Osorio and Sebastian Giovinco earned Toronto FC a 2-0 win.
2017 Gold Cup: Mexico-Jamaica stalemate a preview of future semifinal
While many remember the thrilling 2017 Gold Cup semifinal between Jamaica and Mexico in which the Reggae Boyz earned their first ever Gold Cup win against El Tricolor with a 1-0 victory, these two sides offered a glimpse of what was to come with a 0-0 draw in their group stage affair at Empower Field at Mile High. 2017 Gold Cup Golden Glove winner and Jamaica GK Andre Blake recorded his first of two clean sheets against El Tricolor in the tournament with a number of top saves to cap an excellent defensive display from the Caribbean side.
2015 Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship: U.S. power past Panama
The final group stage match of the 2015 Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship took place at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park with the U.S. looking to complete a perfect campaign in Group A with a win.
