LEON, Mexico Victor Davila scored a pair of goals to help pace Liga MX side Club Leon to a 5-0 victory against Violette of Haiti in the first leg of the 2023 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday night at the Estadio Leon in Leon, Mexico.

The commanding victory moves La Fiera closer to a first ever semifinal in the SCCL era.

Club Leon’s Angel Mena opened the scoring 1-0 in the 8’ when he got on the end of a cross from the left wing that skipped past Violette GK Paul Robert Decius and reached Mena that was then redirected into net.

Midway through the half Violette summoned up their best chance of the half when Miche-Naider Chery got loose in the Club Leon half, but he fired wide with just GK Rodolfo Cota to beat.

Decius came up with two huge saves to keep his side to within a goal. The first was a goal-line intervention with Victor Davila right on the doorstep and ready to score. Minutes later Decius pulled off his finest save of the night by reacting to Brian Rubio’s snapped header and pushing the ball over the crossbar.

The second half saw Violette try to gain more of a foothold in attack, but before the visiting Haitians could entertain thoughts of an equalizer, Club Leon struck for a second score through Davila, whose left-footed shot rippled the net to make it 2-0.

Davila and Club Leon were hungry for more and the attacker carved out his second of the night in the 84’ by receiving a pass in the area and finishing past Decius for a 3-0 advantage.

The night was then capped in second half stoppage time with another two Club Leon goals. First in the 90+1’ there was a skillful touch and finish from Lucas Di Yorio for a 4-0 lead, followed by a last-minute breakaway and finish from Elias Hernandez to round out the 5-0 scoreline.
