Club Leon looking to turn tables against Tigres at home

MIAMI, Florida – Club Leon will be looking to turn the tables against fellow Liga MX side Tigres when the two teams meet in the second leg of the 2023 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League semifinals on Wednesday night at the Estadio Leon in Leon, Mexico.

Tigres came away with a 2-1 win in last week’s first leg and will be seeking to secure their fifth appearance in an SCCL Final with either a draw or a victory.

However, Club Leon have been a formidable foe at home in this year’s tournament, outscoring opponents 7-0 and would love another clean sheet victory to advance to their first ever SCCL Final.

As part of an odd scheduling twist, the two teams also squared off in Liga MX action over the weekend, with Club Leon earning a 3-0 home win. La Fiera would like nothing better than to collect another result of the same kind.

It will not be easy though against a Tigres side that has displayed exceptional form in this SCCL. Look no further than Luis Quinones, who has three goals and four assists and talismanic striker Andre-Pierre Gignac, who has 16 goals in his storied SCCL career.

Recent history is also in Tigres’ favor, with the Felinos unbeaten in their last 10 SCCL matches (8W-2D-0L). They are also unbeaten in their last three away matches in SCCL play and have emerged victorious from their last five series when they have won the first leg.

Club Leon’s record at home in Concacaf competition is a solid one, with nine wins, four draws and just one defeat in 14 matches. Wednesday’s hosts have scored in 15 of their last 17 SCCL matches and have registered five clean sheets in the last two editions of the tournament. They are also second among teams in the 2023 SCCL in shots per game with 14.8.

Victor Davila tallied the Club Leon goal in the first leg and will seek to add to his three-goal total in the tournament, while veteran attacker Elias Hernandez has two goals and two assists.

Two sides now quite familiar with each other will take the field again with the glittering prize of a berth in the Final at stake.
