Toluca defeats Tigres on penalties to claim third Champions Cup title
The goalkeeper Luis García was the standout performer, leading Toluca to the title.
TOLUCA, Mexico – The 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup concluded with Deportivo Toluca FC and Tigres UANL drawing 1-1 in the Final, with the former winning 6-5 in the penalty shootout, on Saturday at Estadio Nemesio Díez in Toluca, Mexico.
Toluca goalkeeper Luis García delivered important saves for the hosts in the final stretch to keep the match scoreless. García first made a vital double save in the 79’ to deny attempts from Rômulo and André-Pierre Gignac on a corner kick opportunity, followed by an acrobatic effort to deny a dangerous ball in the 82’.
With the two sides holding each other scoreless through 90 minutes, with the match needed extra time to define the champion. García began extra time with another pivotal intervention in the 94’, saving an attempt from Tigres’ Ángel Correa from the right end of the box.
Los Diablos Rojos broke the deadlock in the 104’, with Jorge Díaz controlling a precise line-splitting pass from Fernando Arce inside the box before slotting the ball into the bottom-left corner.
Joaquim leveled the scoring in the 114’ with a towering header inside the box on a Tigres free kick opportunity. Juan Brunetta delivered the ball to collect the assist.
The two sides remained inseparable through extra time, leading to a penalty shootout to define the winner.
Pável Pérez struck first to give Toluca the lead, before André-Pierre Gignac equalized for Tigres. The next three kickers made no mistake from the penalty spot, Santiago Simón scored for the hosts and Juan Brunetta tied once again for Tigres. Federico Pereira then struck for Toluca.
García followed with a big save to deny the penalty attempt from Tigres captain Fernando Gorrirarán.
Toluca’s Jorge Díaz and Tigres’ Ángel Correa were both on target, before Tigres goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán stopped the attempt from Franco Romero.
Diego Laínez then leveled the shootout for Los Felinos at 4-4. Toluca’s Sebastián Córdova and Tigres’ Rômulo both converted their penalties and the shootout remained tied 5-5, before Fernando Arce placed Toluca in the lead 6-5.
García, who was named the Superior Player of the Match presented by Michelob Ultra, was the hero of the night saving Juan Purata’s penalty for Toluca to win the shootout 6-5 and secure the victory.
As 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup winners, Toluca secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup and 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.

- Toluca have won both penalty shootouts they have participated in during the Concacaf Champions Cup. Prior to today, they defeated the San Jose Earthquakes in the quarterfinals of the 2013-14 edition.
- The last Concacaf Champions Cup Final to go to extra time was in the 2005-06 edition, which also featured two Mexican clubs, when Club América defeated Toluca.

- At 40 years and 109 days old, Tigres UANL goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán became the oldest player to start a Concacaf Champions Cup Final since at least 2011. Meanwhile, André-Pierre Gignac (40 years, 176 days) became the oldest player to appear in a Final during that span.
- Diego Lainez (Tigres UANL) drew both of Toluca’s yellow cards, forcing cautions from Everardo López in the 87th minute and Mauricio Isais in the 96th minute of extra time. Lainez was also the most-fouled player in the match, drawing six fouls.
- This marked the first time since at least 2011 that a goal in a Concacaf Champions Cup Final was both scored and assisted by substitutes, as Fernando Arce set up Jorge Díaz’s goal for Toluca.
- Jesús Garza (Tigres UANL) won seven tackles tonight, the most by any player in a Concacaf Champions Cup match this season and the highest total in a Final since Felipe Baloy won eight for Santos Laguna against Monterrey in the first leg of the 2012 Final.
- Both goals scored by Toluca in Concacaf Champions Cup Finals during the modern era (since 2008) have been scored by substitutes: Jorge Díaz today and Edgar Benítez in 2014. Díaz became the first substitute to score in a Concacaf Champions Cup Final since André-Pierre Gignac did so for Tigres in 2019.
- Joaquim’s equalizing goal for Tigres UANL was his second goal of the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup, matching Toluca’s Jesús Gallardo for the most goals scored by a defender in this year’s competition.
