Tafari lifts LAFC to victory

LAFC earned a crucial First Leg advantage, defeating Toluca 2-1 at home in Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES – The 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup continued with Los Angeles FC earning a 2-1 victory over Deportivo Toluca FC in the First Leg of their Semifinals series on Wednesday at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA.

LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris had a key double intervention in the 44’ to keep the match scoreless heading into the half. The FIFA World Cup winner showed quick reflexes on a corner kick opportunity for the visitors to deny efforts from close range from Nicolás Castro and Jesús Gallardo.

Timothy Tillman broke the deadlock to place the hosts in the lead in the 51’, finding the back of the net with a right footed finish to the bottom-left corner from the top of the box. Son Heung-Min picked up the assist on the play.

Jesús Angulo equalized for Toluca in the 73’. Paulinho played a ball for the midfielder outside the box down the left, before Angulo curled the ball into the bottom-right corner.

Nikosi Tafari restored the lead for the home side in dramatic fashion in the 90’+1’, scoring the winner with a diving header from inside the box to capitalize on a precise cross from Son on a set piece situation down the left end.

Tafari was named the Superior Player of the Match for his match-winning goal.

The two teams will meet for the Second Leg next Wednesday at Estadio Nemesio Díez in Toluca, Mexico. The winner on aggregate will advance to the Final.
