Aguilar implores Club America to stay focused

On Wednesday, the Mexico international and his Club America teammates will host Tigres in the second leg of the 2015-16 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League final, holding a 2-0 advantage from last week’s series opener. That two-goal cushion is what worries Aguilar most. There’s an element of danger associated with a such a lead. Consequently, the 30-year-old sent a signal that he doesn’t want the Aguilas to be complacent at the Estadio Azteca against the current Mexican champion. “It would be an error for us to be overconfident,” said Aguilar, who – since the end of last April -- has also won the 2014/15 SCCL, the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup and the 2015 CONCACAF Cup. “From the beginning, we knew that finals are 180 minutes. Fortunately, the team did a great job in Monterrey by bringing back a favorable result. I think if we approach the match with a 0-0 scoreline in mind, we can play a game in which we go out attacking the opponent, where we go out to pressure, where we go out to attack and not sit back.” Aguilar missed the first leg with an injury, but he expects to be back and is calling on the fans to give maximum support. “We always want the Azteca to weigh on opponents,” the four-time CONCACAF club champion expressed. “It is a reality that the fans are always supporting us and we hope tomorrow will be no exception. Logically, we will try to concentrate in what we have to do on the field.” A win, draw or a defeat by just one goal will give Club America a record-breaking seventh CONCACAF title and second consecutive berth in the FIFA Club World Cup. Before a trip to Japan can be booked, however, the Aguilas must see off a Tigres side that has only one win in seven all-time SCCL away games. “This is step by step,” Aguilar finished. “We cannot think that we are already in Japan. We have 90 minutes to go. What we cannot do is get overconfident and go out relaxed. We have a great opponent in front of us. We have to focus on having a great game.”
