CASTRIES, St. Lucia -- Whether it’s in practice or representing St. Lucia, Troy Greenidge has a simple objective each time he steps on a football field.
“Every day, I try to score, to become the best striker on the island,” Greenidge told CONCACAF.com.
The 22-year-old has done a good job of living up to those lofty expectations, scoring six goals in two matches for Gros Islet in the Super League Inter-District competition this season. He also competes for the Northern United All-Stars in the St. Lucia Gold Division, the nation’s top tier.
Despite all of his success, Greenidge said his biggest thrill is when he can pull on the jersey of his nation, as will be the case in the upcoming Windward Islands Men’s Championship.
“It feels very special to play for my country,” Greenidge said. “That’s the probably biggest thing you can do, to play for your country, for your family.”
Greenidge, who started playing football at five-years-old, first had the opportunity to wear his national colors with a youth national team when he was 16.
“I was the MVP,” Greenidge beamed.
St. Lucia is the current Windward Islands champion and opens defense of its crown on Tuesday against Dominica. That the tournament is on home soil is significant to Greenidge.
“That would be something big for the nation because we are home,” he expressed. “No country has won back-to-back. That would be something good for us.”
After the competition, St. Lucia faces Antigua & Barbuda in the second round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup next month.
While Greenidge doesn’t want to look too far ahead just yet, he has high expectations for his own future.
“It would be something good, to play overseas.” he finished. “That’s one of my goals to further my career.”
If Greenidge continues to score – in training and games – no doubt he will achieve that aim.
