Bermuda, Jamaica open Group F with victories

MIAMI, Florida – Bermuda and Jamaica emerged as winners to open Group F of the 2024 Concacaf Men’s Under-20 Championship Qualifying on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Groups A, B, C, D and E return to action on Sunday.

Group F

The teams in Group F began their CMU20Q campaigns on Saturday at the SKNFA Technical Center in Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis, beginning with Bermuda defeating Grenada 2-1.

Sachiel Ming (37’) and Riley Robinson (71’) scored for Bermuda, while Vijay Valcin (42’) tallied for Grenada.

The second match of the day saw Jamaica take down Martinique 1-0. Romain Blake scored the lone goal for the Reggae Boyz in the 67’ for the three points.

Group A

Group A resumes at the Estadio Nacional in Managua, Nicaragua, beginning with Cuba against British Virgin Islands. Cuba defeated BVI 29-0 in their lone previous meeting in 2011. Cuba are coming off a 13-0 win versus Anguilla, while BVI fell 8-0 to Nicaragua.

The nightcap sees host nation Nicaragua facing Belize, with Nicaragua seeking their second win against Belize all-time. The Pinoleros are looking to make it two wins in two games in the tournament, while Belize are making their debut.

Group B

Things get going early in Group B at the ABFA Technical Centre in Piggots, Antigua and Barbuda, with El Salvador taking on Guyana. The two sides split their first two meetings, with Guyana winning 2-0 in 2018.

El Salvador opened with a 7-0 win against Turks and Caicos Islands, while Guyana succumbed 4-0 to Antigua and Barbuda.

Suriname will play their first game in this CMU20Q against hosts Antigua and Barbuda, who are coming off that 4-0 win against Guyana. This all-time series is also tied at one win each.

Group C

Group C resumes at the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores in Guatemala City, Guatemala, with the rivalry between Aruba and Curacao. Aruba will make their debut, while Curacao got a last-minute goal to overcome Saint Martin 1-0 in their opener.

Aruba lead the all-time series with Curacao at the U20 level with a 4W-2D-2L record.

Saint Martin will square off with hosts Guatemala in the second match of the day. Saint Martin fell just shy against Curacao, while Guatemala were 3-1 winners against Barbados. This will be their first-ever meeting.

Group D

Group D at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain returns with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines battling with Canada in a first ever match-up between the two nations.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to Trinidad and Tobago in their opener after being up two goals, while Canada were 8-0 victors over Dominica.

Trinidad and Tobago return for the nightcap against Dominica. The Soca Warriors will be feeling confident after their comeback win against Vincy Heat, while Dominica will try to rebound from their loss to Canada. This will be their first-ever meeting.

Group E

Group E is back at the SKNFA Technical Center in Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis, with Cayman Islands facing Puerto Rico. Cayman Islands are looking to bounce back from their 4-1 loss to Haiti, while Puerto Rico were 5-0 winners with Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Cayman Islands lead the all-time series with two wins from three matches, but Puerto Rico were winners in their last meeting in 2020.

The day will then close with hosts Saint Kitts and Nevis taking on Haiti. Haiti are pursuing a second win in the group, while Saint Kitts and Nevis are searching for their first. Haiti have won all three previous meetings.
