BRADENTON, Florida – The United States is champion of the CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship for the fourth time following a 3-2 win over Mexico in the 2018 CWU17 final on Tuesday.
Maya Doms scored the winning goal in the 76’ as the U.S. twice came back from deficits to down El Tricolor.
Mexico pressured the U.S. defense from the start and that led to Alison Gonzalez winning a penalty after a foul in the area. Nicole Perez stepped up and converted the spot kick to hand El Tricolor a 1-0 lead in the 32’.
The reaction from the U.S. was immediate, as Hannah Bebar turned in a flicked-on corner kick to pull the U.S. level in the 35’.
Mexico was tireless in its pursuit of the ball in the U.S. half and it bore fruit when a U.S. miscue led to Nayeli Diaz swooping onto a loose ball and finishing into an open net in the 45’ to give Mexico a 2-1 halftime lead.
But again the U.S. would respond immediately to a Mexico goal, as Fontes made it 2-2 in the 46’ when she received a Kate Wiesner pass on the left flank and fired in a left-footed shot.
Both teams were on the hunt for a game-winning goal and the U.S. would find it in the 76’ minute thanks to a well-struck left-footed shot from Doms that gave the U.S. a 3-2 lead that held up until the final whistle.
