Chinchilla leads Costa Rica over Cayman Islands
ALAJUELA, Costa Rica – The 2025/26 Concacaf W Qualifiers continued with Costa Ricaearning a 21-nil win over the Cayman Islands in Group C on Friday at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, Costa Rica.
Priscila Chinchilla led the way with seven goals, scoring three in the first half and four in the second as part of an offensive onslaught.
María Salas and Rocky Rodríguez also added hat tricks for the hosts, who were up 9-nil at the break.
Costa Rica had eight different scorers, with braces from Sheika Scott and Mariana Benavides , which included a brilliant free kick over the wall in the 13’ and a blast from outside of the box in the 33’.
Entering the game, Las Ticas trailed Guatemala by 13 goals in differential. With the result, they now have an eight-goal advantage heading into a crucial final match in the Qualifiers.
Costa Rica will face Guatemala on April 18 for direct qualification to the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027. Cayman Islands closes out its qualifying cycle against Grenada on April 14.

- Raquel Rodríguez of Costa Rica reached 24 goals in the history of the qualifiers, strengthening her position as the all-time leading scorer for her national team in this tournament, at least since 2002. She also scored three goals in a single match for the 2nd time, after previously doing so against Curaçao (Apr 9, 2022).
- María Paula Salas of Costa Rica reached six goals in the history of the qualifiers and recorded her first hat-trick in the competition, becoming the 5th hat-trick scored by a Costa Rican player in the tournament, at least since 2002. Meanwhile, Mélissa Herrera also reached six goals in the history of the qualifiers and scored her first goal in the current edition of the tournament, after previously scoring four goals in 2018 (three vs. El Salvador and one vs. Cuba) and one goal in 2022 (vs. U.S. Virgin Islands).
- Priscila Rodríguez of Costa Rica scored her first goal in the history of the qualifiers.
- Costa Rica tied Canada (vs. Puerto Rico, Aug 28, 1998) and Haiti (vs. British Virgin Islands, Apr 9, 2022) as the national teams with the largest margin of victory in the history of the qualifiers (21-0).
- It marked the 37th victory for Costa Rica in the history of the qualifiers and the 3rd home victory on its own soil in as many matches, all without conceding a goal:
