CHICAGO – United States midfielder Brad Davis has been ruled out of the CONCACAF Gold Cup due to a knee injury, U.S. Soccer announced Tuesday.Per tournament rules and pending CONCACAF approval, a team may replace an injured player on the roster up to 24 hours prior to the first match. The player must come from the 35-man preliminary roster, which was submitted earlier in June.
Davis, who converted the title-winning penalty kick in the shootout against Panama in the 2005 Gold Cup final, assisted on Bobby Wood’s winning goal three minutes from full time in a 2-1 win over Germany on June 10.
Atlas defender Greg Garza has been called up by U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann for a friendly against visiting Guatemala on Friday in Nashville, Tennessee. The 23-year-old, who made his international debut against the Czech Republic on September 3, 2014, and has earned seven caps, was on the USA’s 35-man preliminary Gold Cup roster.
The United States opens defense of its CONCACAF Gold Cup crown against Honduras as part of a Group A doubleheader in Frisco, Texas, on July 7.
