Neighbors USA and Canada lock horns in quarterfinals

CINCINNATI, Ohio – North American neighbors United States and Canada will meet in a Concacaf Gold Cup knockout round match for the first time since 2007 in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Gold Cup on Sunday night at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.

It will be the sixth Gold Cup meeting between the two nations, with the U.S. owning an advantage of four wins and a draw, including a 1-0 victory in the group stage finale of the 2021 edition.

However, the last time these two met in a knockout round match came in the 2007 tournament in a dramatic 2-1 victory for the U.S.

The U.S. attack found its stride during the group stage and finished with 13 goals over the three games. Jesus Ferreira has been the biggest contributor with six goals, including back-to-back hat tricks in the 6-0 win versus Saint Kitts and Nevis and the 6-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago.

Ferreira became the first player to score a hat trick in two Gold Cup games during the same edition and is also the first U.S. player to score hat tricks in back-to-back games.

It hasn’t been all Ferreira in the U.S. Gold Cup campaign, though. GK Matt Turner saved a penalty in the opening 1-1 draw with Jamaica, while MF Djordje Mihailovic supplied two goals and two assists over the three games to help the U.S. claim the top spot in Group A.

Canada’s Gold Cup campaign started with two straight draws in a 2-2 final against Guadeloupe in Toronto, followed by a tough 0-0 draw with Guatemala. The Canadians left no doubt, however, in their group stage finale against Cuba, emerging with a 4-2 victory to secure a second-place finish in Group D.

The dangermen for Canada have come in the form of Junior Hoilett and Lucas Cavallini. Hoilett had a goal and two assists, while Cavallini contributed a goal and an assist in the group stage.

Defensively, Kamal Miller has been one of the standouts, completing 186 of 198 passes and making three ball recoveries.
