SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – Yaqueisi Nuñez scored four goals and the Dominican Republic defeated St Lucia 7-0 on Wednesday to open Group 5 play in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Women’s Caribbean Cup at the Estadio Panamericano.
The host opened the scoring in the 24th minute as Betzaida Ubri netted the first of her two goals.
Two minutes later, Nuñez doubled the lead with her initial tally. The 20-year-old forward (54’, 84’, 90’+2) added three more in the second half.
Gabriela Peña made it 3-0 in the 47th minute, while Ubri added another in the 62nd minute.
The CFU Women’s Caribbean Cup is the region’s national team championship that is also serving as a Women’s World Cup qualifying competition.
The group winner will advance to Caribbean’s final round in August, when berths to the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championship will be at stake.
St. Lucia returns to action on Friday against Jamaica.
