Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba clinch berths in Concacaf Women’s Championship

KINGSTON, JamaicaTrinidad and Tobago and Cuba are both off to the Concacaf Women’s Championship after clinching berths on the final matchday in the Caribbean Zone of Concacaf Women’s Championship Qualifying at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica.

Trinidad and Tobago finished strong with a 3-0 victory over Bermuda to complete the five-team round robin with a 3W-0D-1L, 9 points, 12GF, 6GC record and a second-place finish, while Cuba nailed down the third and final spot despite a 6-1 defeat to first-place Jamaica.

Cuba wrapped up the tournament with a 2-0-2, 6, 12GF, 9GC mark, while hosts Jamaica, who punched its ticket to the CWC last Friday, posted a spotless record of 4-0-0, 12, 23GF, 2GC.

It was no surprise to see Kayla Taylor carry the day for the Women Soca Warriors in the first match. Heading into the contest she had scored six goals in CWCQ and completed qualifying with seven goals after opening the scoring in the 12’.

Any thoughts of a Bermuda comeback in the second half were then stemmed by the efforts of Kennya Cordner, who scored in the 57’ and 87’ for her brace to earn the three points that pushes Trinidad and Tobago a step closer to a FIFA Women’s World Cup dream.

While Cuba went down in defeat to the Reggae Girlz, the islanders could still take solace in their third-place finish and ended on a high on Sunday night with Maria Isabel Perez Torres’s goal in the 90+3’.

As for Jamaica, Chinyelu Asher (19’, 70’) and Khadija Shaw (20’, 38’) each bagged braces, while Lauren Silver (32’) and Jody Brown (34’) chipped in with scores for the hosts.
