MEXICO CITY – By the time it’s all said and done, Mexico could stand alone in the CONCACAF Hexagonal record book.
By winning its last two matches of the Russia 2018 qualifying campaign, the first-place Tricolor (5W-3D-0L, 18 points) will establish a new record for the most points in a single Hexagonal, bettering the 23-point mark set by Costa Rica during the edition for 2002 edition.
“It is very important to get six points,” said forward Hirving Lozano. “We are there and, if we achieve history, it would be something very nice. We work day to day to win. This national team has very good players and a lot of quality.”
With a World Cup berth already secured, Mexico’s motivation to defeat sixth-place Trinidad & Tobago (4 pts./October 6, home) and fifth-place Honduras (9 pts./October 10, away) is high.
“In the end Mexico wants to be out ahead in matches, going out to win,” said defender Oswaldo Alanis. “Also, [as players] winning ourselves a spot for the World Cup. We have a legacy of making our own history, of doing things better than they have been done; without risking things, thinking about the best for the players, but also thinking about the six points.”
In the five previous Hexagonals, Mexico finished atop the table once in 1997 for France 1998.
