BAYAMON, Puerto Rico – Canada won for the second time in four days, defeating host Puerto Rico 3-0 in an international friendly on Monday at the Estadio Juan Roman Loubriel.
Second-half substitutes Randy Edwini-Bonsu and Cyle Larin each scored their first senior international goals for Canada, which defeated Guatemala 1-0 on Friday.
The visitor enjoyed much of the early possession, but didn’t get on the scoreboard until late in the first half. Defender David Edgar released a superb pass into the left side of the box for Maxim Tissot. The Impact de Montreal midfielder crossed to Tosaint Ricketts, whose initial shot appeared to be blocked. Fortuitously, the ball bounced back to the Hapoel Haifa forward and he found the back of the net with his left foot from seven-yards out.
Edwini-Bonsu entered the game at the start of the second half and doubled Canada’s advantage 15 minutes later. Karl W. Ouimette brought the ball to the edge of the Puerto Rico penalty area and then fed Edwini-Bonsu a pass that allowed him to skip past a defender and coolly slot home from 13 yards with his left foot.
In the 77th minute, Larin put a punctuation mark on the encounter, knocking in a right-sided cross from close range.
In the second round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup this coming June, Canada and Puerto Rico will face Dominica and Grenada, respectively.
