VERACRUZ, Mexico -- Mexico earned its second football gold medal within 24 hours at the 2014 Central American & Caribbean Games as the men secured an emphatic 4-1 victory over Venezuela on Friday at Estadio Luis Pirata Fuente.
The Mexicans captured the women's gold medal on Thursday, topping Colombia 2-1 at the same stadium.
Erick Torres struck for two goals, while Angel Zaldivar and Raul Lopez added one each for the host, which won the competition for the sixth time and for the first time in 24 years when it hosted in Mexico City.
The Tricolor made short work of its South American foe, grabbing a two-goal advantage by the 14th minute. Zaldivar found the back of the net past goalkeeper Kleiner Escoricia in the ninth minute, before Lopez doubled the lead only five minutes later.
Torres better his first goal to increase the margin to 3-0 in the 34th minute.
The striker wasn't finished as he volleyed home the rebound of a blocked Zaldivar shot from point-blank range in the 79th minute.
Venezuela pulled one back in the 81st minute through captain Andres Ponce, who tallied off a right-wing cross past goalkeeper Michael Lajud.
El Tri rolled through the group stage with a 3-0-0 record, defeating Honduras (5-2), El Salvador (2-0) and Jamaica (5-0). In the semifinals, Mexico prevailed over 7-6 on penalty kicks after the sides played to a 1-1 draw.
In the third-place match, earlier in the evening, Cuba registered a 3-1 triumph over Honduras at the Unidad Deportiva Hugo Sanchez.
