CARSON, California – Mexico got a pair of goals from Marco Bueno to ignite defense of its CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship title with a 4-0 win over Costa Rica on Friday at the StubHub Center.
The result meant that the Tricolor finished the evening atop the Group B table on goal difference over Honduras, which defeated Haiti 1-0 in the first game of a twin bill.
Bueno (19’, 77’) struck once in each half, while an own-goal by William Fernandez (45+) made it 2-0 just before the half. Erick Torres (88’), the only returnee from the 2012 side, completed the scoreline with two minutes remaining in normal time.
It was Costa Rica’s first appearance in the finals since 2004, when it lost to Mexico in the championship match, 1-0, after extra time.
The victory extended Mexico’s winning streak in the competition to seven games.
They will return to action on Sunday, also at the StubHub Center, with Costa Rica taking on the Hondurans and Mexico squaring off against Haiti.
