Cibao FC seeking history against stalwarts Motagua

MIAMI, Florida – Cibao FC will be out to make some history on Wednesday night when they square off with Honduran club Motagua in the first leg of the 2022 Scotiabank Concacaf League Round of 16 at the Estadio Cibao in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic.

Should they find the back of the net against the three-time SCL runners-up, Cibao would become the first Dominican side to score in the SCL. The 2022 edition is Cibao’s second appearance in the tournament.

The Caribbean side qualified for the SCL by virtue of their runner-up finish in the 2022 Flow Concacaf Caribbean Club Championship and many of the players who played a key role in that deep FCCCC run are likely to feature on Wednesday.

The Motagua defense will have to be wary of Herold Charles, who had two goals in the FCCCC, while veteran midfielder Jean Carlos Lopez will bring valuable SCL experience to the field.

Motagua are participating in their fifth SCL and are set to play in their record 29th SCL game after qualifying as the 2022 Clausura champion in Honduran football.

Many of the names who have been part of Motagua’s three SCL Final appearances will be back in the fold and joining the quest for a coveted first crown.

There is strength in the back with GK Jonathan Rougier, who has the most saves all-time in the SCL with 67 and won the 2019 SCL Golden Glove.

MF Juan Delgado led all players in balls recovered in the 2021 SCL with 21, while up front Roberto Moreira has seven goals and an assist in his SCL career.
