SCCL giants clash as Monterrey face Club America in Final

Published on

MONTERREY, Mexico – It will be a clash of Concacaf titans as four-time Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League winners Monterrey host seven-time Concacaf champions Club America in the 2021 SCCL Final on Thursday night at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer in Monterrey, Mexico.

It marks the 13th all-Mexican Final in Concacaf history and will be the 37th Concacaf club crown won by a team from Liga MX.

Thursday’s duel also pits two teams that have never lost a Final in the SCCL era, with Club America lifting the trophy in their two Final appearances in 2014-15 and 2015-16, while Rayados emerged victorious in their four previous Final appearances in 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2019.

Ironically, this will be the first ever SCCL contest between the two decorated clubs, and there is no doubt that each side boast star power from back to front.

For visiting Club America, it all starts in goal with veteran GK Guillermo Ochoa, who won the Concacaf Champions Cup in 2006 with Club America and now will be looking for another Concacaf crown 15 years later.

DFs Bruno Valdez and Emanuel Aguilera are important presences on the back line, while MF Alvaro Fidalgo serves as a key cog in the attacking wheel for Las Aguilas.

Fidalgo leads the team in passes (202) and fouls received (15) in the 2021, allowing the likes of FW Federico Vinas (3 goals) and FW Henry Martin (1 goal) to do their damage.

Monterrey are strong in their own regard, and many of the same players who won the 2019 SCCL are back in the fold, including center back Cesar Montes, fullback Jesus Gallardo and MF Carlos Rodriguez.

Rayados can also rely on the playmaking of MF Maximiliano Meza, who leads the team with four goals and two assists in the 2021 SCCL, and FW Rogelio Funes Mori (2 goals), who can strike any time he has the ball at his feet.

Two historically successful clubs with some of the best talent in the Concacaf region squaring off in a winner-take-all Final has all the makings of a Concacaf classic.
