Altidore goal gives AZ Dutch Cup title

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands - United States international Jozy Altidore scored the game-winning goal in the 14th minute to propel AZ Alkmaar past PSV Eindhoven 2-1 in the KNVB Cup final on Thursday at the Stadion Feijenoord.

AZ captured its fourth Dutch Cup championship (first since 1982) to secure a playoff berth in next season's Europa League qualifying.

Altidore's strike came two minutes after Adam Maher had given AZ the lead. The 23-year-old American placed a shot past goalkeeper Boy Waterman from inside the penalty area off an assist from Viktor Elm.

With one game left on the AZ schedule, Altidore has 31 goals in all competitions, the most ever by an American in a European season. Clint Dempsey held the previous record, scoring 23 goals for Fulham last year.
