2016-17 SCCL group stage: Whitecaps, Red Bulls march forward

MIAMI, Florida – This Friday at 7:00 PM ET, Concacaf will be airing a re-broadcast of the 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League quarterfinal second leg between Atlanta United and Monterrey, followed by the 2016-17 SCCL quarterfinal second leg between the Vancouver Whitecaps and the New York Red Bulls. Both matches will be shown on Concacaf’s Facebook and YouTube pages, plus the Concacaf App.

Both Vancouver and New York faced challenges in their respective groups in the 2016-17 SCCL.

Drawn into Group C with fellow MLS side Sporting Kansas City and Central FC of Trinidad and Tobago, it was crucial for Vancouver to get off to a good start and they did just that with a 1-0 win over Central FC in Trinidad and Tobago on matchday one.

Looming on the horizon were a pair of crunch battles with Sporting Kansas City, and thanks to a brace from Cristian Techera and a score from Erik Hurtado, Vancouver upended Sporting Kansas City 3-0 in Vancouver on matchday three.

Matchday four would prove pivotal, as the Whitecaps appeared destined to play to a 1-1 draw in Kansas City, but in second half stoppage time 15-year-old Alphonso Davies scored his first goal with the Vancouver first team to earn the Whitecaps a 2-1 win that sealed their place in the knockout round.

Vancouver would complete the group stage with a perfect 4W-0D-0L record, while outscoring opponents 10-2.

The Red Bulls found themselves in Group F with a pair of Central American opponents, as they took on El Salvador’s Alianza and Antigua GFC of Guatemala.

New York were in action in the first two matchdays and came away with a decisive 3-0 home win over Antigua GFC, followed by a 1-1 draw in El Salvador against Alianza in which Omer Damari’s goal in the 71’ helped the MLS rally to earn a point.

It was a similar story between the Red Bulls and Alianza at Red Bull Arena on matchday four and only a Sacha Kljestan goal in the 90’ separated the two sides, with New York taking all three points to clinch their spot in the quarterfinals.

The Red Bulls then capped their unbeaten group stage campaign with a solid 0-0 draw in Guatemala against Antigua GDFC to finish with a 2W-2D-0L record, with five goals scored and just one allowed.
