Mexico defeats Canada, advances to U-20 Championship Final

Hugo Camberos scored his tournament-leading fifth goal as Mexico advanced to the Final and secured qualification for the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Mexico City - The 2026 Concacaf U-20 Championship continued on Friday with Mexico securing a 2-1 win against Canada in the Semifinals at Estadio Banorte in Mexico City, Mexico.

Canada opened the scoring just six minutes into the match as Owen Graham-Roache struck an impressive volley from outside of the box.

Mexico notched an equalizer in the 49’ when Cristóbal Alfaro’s well-placed effort found the back of the net.

Canada was reduced to ten men when Liam Mackenzie was shown his second yellow card in the 67’.

Mexico’s Hugo Camberos buried the winner from the penalty spot in the 78’, marking his fifth goal of the tournament in as many games, putting him in the lead for the tournament’s Golden Boot.

With the result, Mexico punched their ticket to the men’s football tournament at the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Mexico will face the United States in the Final of the 2026 Concacaf U-20 Championship on Sunday.
