HOUSTON -- The Houston Dynamo announced Friday that it acquired Honduras international Romell Quioto on a full transfer from Honduras’ Olimpia.
The 25-year-old forward is reunited with fellow Honduras international and former Olimpia teammate Alberth Elis, who joined Houston earlier in the week on loan from Mexico’s Monterrey.
“Romell is balanced and strong. He’s also a goal scorer and just like Alberth he is a starter for the Honduran national team,” said Dynamo head coach Wilmer Cabrera. “Romell plays on the left even though he is naturally a right-footed player. He has also played as a central forward and he is Olimpia’s goal scorer. He’s the type of player we need. Both Romell and Alberth bring a lot of creativity and speed to our front line and they can play in space, on the sideline, in a central position or from the midfield.”
In 27 games for Honduras, Quioto has scored four goals -- including a team-high three in CONCACAF qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup -- has competed in the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup (2 games/0 goals) and the 2014 Copa Centroamericana (2/0). He also helped the Catrachos to a fourth-place finish in the 2016 Olympic Games (5/1) and is nominee for the 2016 CONCACAF Player of the Year award.
Quioto joined Olimpia from Vida on January 5, 2014, and scored 36 goals in 78 appearances, helping the Leones to three Honduran league titles (2014 Clausura, 2015 Clausura, 2016 Clausura). He has competed in three editions of the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League, striking for four goals in 10 matches. In 2012, Quioto was loaned to Poland’s Wisla Krakow and played in nine games.
