Concacaf star Vega of Mexico ready to prove self to world

MIAMI, Florida – The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar kicks off on Sunday with 32 teams in pursuit of lifting the trophy and proclaiming themselves world champions.

Each of the four Concacaf teams in the tournament have a player in their midst who is on the rise and has the make-up to be one of the game’s biggest stars in the years to come.

For Mexico, that player is Alexis Vega.

The 24-year-old Alexis Vega already has five goals in just 21 appearances with the Mexican Senior Men’s National Team since his debut back on March 26, 2019 in an international friendly versus Paraguay.

The Chivas FW was a mainstay of Head Coach Gerardo Martino’s squad during Concacaf World Cup Qualifying, playing 465 minutes over the course of nine matches and scoring two goals.

Vega has already tasted title-winning success with Mexico, having played two games with El Tricolor during their run to the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup crown. That was also where Vega scored his first Mexico goal, doing so in a 7-0 group stage win versus Cuba.

Perhaps Vega’s finest moment with Mexico came in the 2020 Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship on home soil where he played in all five matches and scored a goal. For his efforts, Vega earned the Best Player Award and was also named to the tournament’s Best XI.

He then parlayed that superb performance into a spot on Mexico’s Olympic team at Tokyo 2020, helping his country take home the Bronze Medal thanks in part to his three goals in six matches.

Vega arrives into the World Cup in fine form, having scored in recent friendlies, a September contest against Colombia and then earlier this month against Iraq.

As always, Mexico boast a lot of young talent heading into a World Cup and Vega stands to be the latest to make his name known to the rest of the world.
