Pavi brace paves way for Colombia against Panama

SAN DIEGO, California – The first match of the second matchday of the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup group stage saw an encounter between Panama and Colombia on Wednesday evening at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego in which the South American side downed the Canaleras 6-0 to get their first three points.

Colombia scored their first W Gold Cup goal in the 26’ after a great open play that put MF Manuela Pavi in front of Panama’s area, with Pavi getting on a loose ball and finding the back of the net for the first time.

Pavi got her brace in the 34’ when she again was ready in the area to receive a filtered ball, getting past the Panamanian defense to double the Colombia lead to 2-0.

The ball saw the back of the net again in the 36’ for the third goal of the night for Colombia, FW Catalina Usme taking advantage of a lost ball from Panama GK Yenith Bailey in the área for a 3-0 advantage.

Colombia kept their tally going, getting their fourth goal in the 72’ thanks to the services of FW Manuela Vanegas after a great assist from the left side, scoring the goal with one touch.

World sensation FW Linda Caicedo joined the goal scorers of the night in the 84’, finding an angle to get past Bailey, the ball landing on the right side of the net to make it 5-0.

The last goal of the night came from MF Liana Salazar, who got a ball from the right side in the 89’, getting a header to finish the match at 6-0.

Colombia will try to shine again on Saturday evening against Brazil, while Panama will face Puerto Rico to try get their first win in Group B.
