A goalless debut for Mexico and Argentina in Group A

CARSON, California – The first 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup group stage match kicked off on Tuesday evening at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, with Mexico and Argentina starting Group A action with a 0-0 draw.

Emotions were high from the first minutes of the game and a penalty was awarded when Argentina MF Romina Nunez committed a foul on Mexico MF Karen Luna in the area. Captain and DF Rebeca Bernal was ready to take her chance, but missed the spot kick in the 9’, sending the ball wide to the left side.

La Albiceleste had its first corner kick in the 30’, with FW Yamila Rodriguez putting a dangerous ball in the área but missing her target.

Mexico had another clear chance in the 45’+2 thanks to a free kick taken by FW Jaqueline Ovalle. DF Greta Espinoza attempted a header but missed wide. 

The second half saw both teams fighting to reach each other's areas, Bernal having a clear chance in the 65’, trying to put the ball close to the right post but missing the spot. 

MF Camila Gomez Ares of Argentina created another chance to score, shooting in the area in the 71’, but Mexican GK Esthefanny Barreras made the save, ultimately securing the goalless draw. 

The next match for Mexico will be against the Prelims winner Dominican Republic, while Argentina faces reigning Concacaf W Championship winners, United States, with both games happening on Friday at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson.
