Canada, Panama among winners on Day 1 of CWU20Q

MIAMI, Florida This Friday marked the start of Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship Qualifying with five games on the docket.

Canada started Group A in style with a 15-0 win over Martinique at the Estadio Panamericano in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic.

Olivia Smith (50’, 65’, 85’) and Nyah Rose (63’ 68’ 76’) each had a hat trick, Anabelle Chukwu bagged a brace (45’ 54’), while Thaea Mouratidis (4’), Florianne Jourde (6’), Ella Ottey (11’), Jeneva Hernandez (22’), Zoe Markesini (35’), Rosa Maalouf (37’) and Jaime Perrault (40’), all added their names to the scoresheet.

Also in Group A, El Salvador emerged as 2-1 winners versus Cuba. Dariella Lopez opened the scoring for El Salvador in the 5’, but they would have to wait until the 85’ to get their second of the day, with Amy Angel converting a penalty. Cuba would pull a goal back in the 88’ through Sheila Vega, but El Salvador hung on for the 2-1 victory.

In Group B at the Rignaal Jean Francisca Stadium in Willemstad, Curacao, Panama defeated Curacao 5-1. 

The Canaleras got braces from Daniela Hincapie (13’, 40’) and Deysire Salazar (34’, 77’), plus a goal from Marisa Gross (47’), while Jeleaugh Rosa (59’) accounted for the lone Curacao score.

Group E at the Estadio Nacional in Managua, Nicaragua saw Honduras down Bermuda 6-1. 

Susan Henriquez (8’, 34’) led the way with a pair of goals and was joined on the scoresheet by Emory Sanchez (48’), Anyeli Rodriguez (52’), Betsy Bu (56’) and Ariana Guevara (91’). Sanaa Simmons (89’) tallied the goal for Bermuda.

The night ended with Jamaica winning 6-0 versus Anguilla. Davia Richards (1’), Dannique Wilson (15’). Destiny Powell (27’), Natoya Atkinson (29’) and Tiny Seaton (43’) gave the Reggae Girls a 5-0 halftime lead before they tacked on another in the second half for the 6-0 final.


The teams in Group A, Group B and Group E will all be back in action on Sunday.

At the Estadio Panamericano, Martinique will look for their first win against Friday winners El Salvador, while Saint Vincent and the Grenadines will make their tournament debut against Canada.

Panama will be out for their second win in Group B at the Rignaal Jean Francisca Stadium in Willemstad, Curacao, against a Bahamas side playing in their first match of CWU20Q.

The day in Group E at the Estadio Nacional in Managua sees Anguilla taking on a Honduras side looking for their second win, while Bermuda will be on the hunt for their first three points against Jamaica.
