Semifinals Game Changers: Alonso Hernández and Washington Ortega
Hernández, Ortega, key players for Cartaginés and Alajuelense
MIAMI - The 2026 Concacaf Central American Cup Semifinals saw Game Changers Alonso Hernández and Washington Ortega perform at a high level to help CS Cartaginés and reigning Champions LD Alajuelense, respectively, advance to the Final.
Hernández was pivotal in helping Cartaginés make history by clinching a spot in the Final of the Central American Cup for the first time. The 32-year-old American player found the back of the net in both legs of the Semifinals series that matched Los Brumosos against CD Olimpia, goals that were key in sealing the 3-2 win on aggregate.
Hernández has been one of the main players in attack for the Costa Rican club this campaign, tallying four goals and an assist in eight appearances.
Ortega has been shining in goal for three-time defending champions LD Alajuelense. The Uruguayan goalkeeper delivered two top tier performances between the sticks as La Liga knocked out FC Motagua 2-1 on aggregate to return to the Final for a fourth straight year, playing the complete 90 minutes in both games, posting a clean sheet in the First Leg, recording a total 10 saves.
Ortega, who’s kept two clean sheets in eight matches this campaign, will now be relishing the Final as he aims to secure back-to-back Central American Cup titles after joining Alajuelense in January 2025.
