Seattle Sounders confident of winning again in Mexico

(Photo: Mexsport) MEXICO CITY – Club America has the home field advantage and a pair of road goals heading into the second leg of its Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal. With an away win at the Estadio Azteca, Seattle Sounders FC will book a berth in the semifinals for a second-ever time. "It's obviously difficult for us to come here because it's Club America's home field,” said head coach Sigi Schmid. “We also know that we need to win in order to advance. “Our chances are there to win. I mean, it's very difficult, but difficult does not mean impossible.” In the first leg on February 23, a 2-2 draw, the Sounders got a pair of goals from United States international Clint Dempsey – his first ever in the competition. After each of the 32-year-old’s strikes, however, the Aguilas found a way to equalize. “We were disappointed in not being able to hold the lead in Seattle, but we are also confident that we can play and win here.” The challenge, of course is great. In this year’s SCCL quarterfinals, no Major League Soccer team has won in Mexico after three games, losing each time by the combined score of 8-0. Seattle, though, has the distinction of being one of only two team MLS sides to taste SCCL victory on Mexican soil, defeating Monterrey, 1-0, on August 23, 2011. Additionally, the Sounders eliminated Tigres at the same stage three years ago (agg: 3-2). “It's not an unusual situation,” Schmid said about his team not being favored in SCCL play. “[Three] years ago, we were the underdogs when we played Tigres and we were able to advance. We've also played Santos Laguna in the same tournament and we've lost. So we know the underdog role makes it difficult, but it also means we have nothing to lose.” A key injury could play a factor in the match. Club America will be without influential midfielder Rubens Sambueza, who dislocated his shoulder during a 4-1 home loss to Tigres Saturday night. The 32-year-old Argentine assisted on both of his team’s goals in Seattle.
