Saprissa, UNIFUT win in UNCAF women’s tournament

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – Thanks to offensive outbursts on Thursday at the Estadio Ernesto Rohrmoser, Saprissa and UNIFUT will progress to the 2016 UNCAF Inter-Club Championship semifinals as group-stage winners. The final-four matches on Saturday are: UNIFUT v Universidad Saprissa v Moravia The semifinal winners will meet in Sunday’s final. CONCACAF.com recaps the action: GROUP A Universidad 0 (Honduras) 0, Saprissa (Costa Rica) 5 TSG Player of the Match: Cristin Granados (Saprissa) Cristin Granados (69’, 77’) netted a brace and Saprissa clinched first place in Group A with a 5-0 win over Universidad. The 26-year-old’s goals came after Fabiola Villalobos (26’) and Valeria del Campo (67’) staked the Costa Rican champion to a 2-0 lead. Maria Paula Elizondo (80’) punctuated the scoreline late in the encounter. Villalobos and Granados have a tournament-best three goals each.

GROUP B UNIFUT (Guatemala) 4, Moravia (Costa Rica) 2 TSG Player of the Match: Marilyn Rivera (UNIFUT) Moravia rallied twice from one-goal deficits, but UNIFUT responded with two goals midway through the second half for a 4-2 win. The Guatemalans took a 1-0 lead in the third minute, only for Maria Fernanda Barrantes to level in the 27th minute. Vivian Herrera restored UNIFUT’s advantage ten minutes after the break, but Maria Morales netted an equalizer four minutes later. In the 65th minute, Marilyn Rivera struck for the second time in as many games and Cinthia Lopez added a 70th minute insurance goal, giving UNIFUT first place in Group B.
