Futsal Qualifying: U.S., Canada draw on late goal

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica -- Midfielder Daniel Mattos scored with 24 seconds left on the clock to give the United States a 4-4 draw with Canada in the first leg of their North American qualifying series for a berth in the 2016 CONCACAF Futsal Championship (CFC).

The Americans jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the thrilling encounter at BN Arena, before Canada stormed back with four unanswered goals.

In his international debut, Franck Tayou put the U.S. ahead in 1-0 just before halftime.

Patrick Healy (28’) and Nelson Santana (29’) struck a minute apart after the break, placing the two-time CONCACAF champion in what appeared to be a comfortable advantage.

Within eight minutes, though, the Canadians were up 4-3 as Ian Bennett (30’), Matias Dimarco (36’), Nazim Belguendouz (37’) and Jacob Orellana (38’) all found the back of the net.

As time wound down, Mattos netted dramatically in the 40th minute following a set piece from midfielder Kraig Chiles.

The sides will meet again Thursday, with winner earning the final CFC berth and joining Costa Rica, Cuba and Curacao in Group B.
