LIBERIA, Costa Rica – Ten-man Costa Rica (2-0-0, 6 points) sealed a berth in the 2015 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship on Saturday, defeating El Salvador (1-0-1, 3 points) 2-1 to finish first in Triangular I of Central American qualifying.

The Salvadorans, who finished second in the group, will have another opportunity to secure a spot in the Confederation event.  A playoff series against the runner-up from Triangular II (to be contested later this month between Guatemala, Nicaragua and host Panama) will determine the region’s last ticket.

On a hot afternoon at the Estadio Edgardo Baltodano Briceño, the host jumped ahead in the 18th minute thanks to an own-goal as Salvadoran defender Jose Palomo inadvertently tipped an Ian Smith Quiros effort into his own net.

Just when it appeared that the Ticos would take the 1-0 advantage into the break, Carlos Herrera beat goalkeeper Patrick Sequeira with a strong finish from inside the area to equalize in the 42nd minute.

Costa Rica regained the lead for good in the 67th through a Luis Hernandez header.

El Salvador’s bid for an equalizer was given a boost, when Eduardo Juarez was ejected in the 77th minute for his second yellow card.  The Cuscatlecos, however, could not capitalize on their man advantage.
