Action from the Caribbean Club Championship game between Grenades FC (green jersey) and Elite SC on March 5, 2017, in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica – Cibao FC and Grenades FC have earned places in the 2017 Caribbean Club Championship finals, topping the Group B and Group C tables, respectively, after the first-round quartets concluded Sunday.

Here are some highlights:

GROUP B

  • Cibao FC (Dominican Republic) needed and got a draw against host Don Bosco, 1-1, to finish in first place. Kerlins Geogres gave Don Bosco a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute, but Woodensky Babalito replied with an equalizer just four minutes later. Both sides had a player dismissed: Renaldo Gustave (Don Bosco, 70’) and Richard Dabas (Cibao FC, 90’+3).
  • Marc Mathaisan (39’, 59’, 81’) led the way with three goals as Unite Sainte-Rosienne (Guadeloupe) outpaced Police FC (Montserrat), 10-0. Fabien Nestor (10’, 14’) struck for the game’s first two goals.

GROUP C

  • Trevaughn Harriet (56’, 67’) netted a brace and Grenades FC (Antigua & Barbuda) earned a 2-0 win over Elite SC. The goals gave Harriet five in the competition as he struck in all three group matches.
  • Grenades FC’s place in the finals was confirmed after Club Barcelona Atletico (Dominican Republic) could only manage a 2-2 draw with host Montego Bay United (Jamaica). Thanks to what would’ve been superior goal difference, Club Barcelona Atletico needed a win by any score to advance. Goals by Jesus Meza (32’) and Luis Ismael Diaz (61’) gave a 2-0 lead to the visitor, which saw Eduardo Centeno (79’) be ejected late in the match. After that dismissal, MBU staged a furious rally, with Owayne Gordon (81’) and Dino Williams (85’) finding the back of the net.

The winners of the two remaining first-round groups will advance to the final round, where they will join two-time defending champion Central FC (Trinidad & Tobago) and Group A champion Racing FC, as well as Cibao FC and Grenades FC.
