Panama, Canada qualify for CNL Finals

MIAMI, Florida Canada and Panama have secured their place in the 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League Finals after finishing in first place in their respective groups of League A of the CNL following the results of Tuesday’s group stage finales.

Canada defeated Honduras 4-1 to finish atop Group C, while Panama edged Costa Rica 1-0 to capture Group B. It will be the first ever CNL Finals appearance for both nations.

Canada and Panama join the United States and Mexico as the teams qualified for the CNL Finals.

The second edition of the CNL Finals will be played at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, among the four CNL League A group winners and will consist of semifinals, on Thursday, June 15, and a third place match and final on Sunday, June 18. 

To determine the two semifinal matchups, the four participating national teams are ranked 1-4, according to their performance in the CNL Group Stage, with the highest ranked team facing the lowest ranked team (1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3).

 

The semifinal match-ups are as follows:

  • Panama vs. Canada
  • United States vs. Mexico

Below is the list of the teams qualified thus far for the 2022-23 CNL Finals:


Mexico

El Tricolor are back in the CNL for a second time after winning Group A of League A, finishing two points ahead of second-place Jamaica. Mexico were runners-up of the inaugural edition in 2021, falling to the U.S. 3-2 in extra time in the Final.

United States

The reigning champions of the CNL Finals are back making their second appearance in as many editions of the tournament. The U.S. won Group D of League A, finishing five points ahead of El Salvador.

Canada

The 2022 FIFA World Cup participants qualified for their first ever CNL Finals after finishing atop Group C of League A. Jonathan David and Cyle Larin finished as the top scorers for Canada in the group stage with three goals each.

Panama

Panama qualified for their first ever CNL Finals after finishing atop Group B of League A ahead of Costa Rica and Martinique. Panama did not concede a single goal in their four games during the group stage.
