SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras Honduras rebounded from their home defeat to Curacao last Monday with an impressive 2-1 triumph over Canada in Group C of League A of the 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League on Monday night at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula.

The victory lifts Honduras to first place in the group with six points and also snapped a six-match home losing streak for the Catrachos.

Honduras had a dream start, as they took a 1-0 lead in the 13’ when Romell Quioto flighted in a cross from the left wing, that was chested down by Kevin Lopez, who then promptly fired in a shot that beat Canada GK Milan Borjan for a 1-0 Honduras lead.

Canada sought a response and attempted to pull level before the break, but at each time of asking, they were thwarted by a very solid Honduran defense, anchored by sure-handed GK Luis Lopez.

The visitors kept plugging away in hopes of an equalizer and another big chance came their way in the 64’ from a free kick right outside the Honduras area, but Alphonso Davies slipped on the wet surface and the shot swerved wide.

Instead of a Canadian response, though, the next goal belonged to Honduras, as a counterattack spearheaded by Edwin Solano down the right wing ended with a cross into the area and a swinging right-footed finish from Kervin Arriaga for a 2-0 lead in the 78’.

Canada would not go down without a fight, however, and Jonathan David made it a 2-1 affair in the 86’ when he took a short pass from Cyle Larin and finished past Lopez for the goal.

In the end, though, Honduras would pocket the three points to keep their CNL Finals hopes very much intact.
