Concacaf Nations League Qualifying Moments: Janga and Nazon share scoring title

MIAMI, Florida – 2019-20 Concacaf Nations League Qualifying will always be remembered for Concacaf’s first foray into the Nations League format, as 34 teams battled over the course of four matchdays to determine their place in Leagues A, B and C, plus the remaining 10 berths in the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup. Among the many top performances on an individual level, two players stood out for their goal-scoring exploits: Rangelo Janga of Curacao and Duckens Nazon of Haiti. Janga and Nazon would finish as the top scorers in CNLQ with six goals each, and both were done in spectacular fashion. The 28-year-old Janga kicked off his CNLQ campaign with a performance to remember, notching a second-half hat trick in a 10-0 win for Curacao against Grenada. Janga struck in the 58’, 84’ and 88’ as part of a seven-goal second half for Curacao, which set the table for the island’s fourth-place finish in CNLQ and a second-ever Gold Cup berth. On matchday two, Janga was back at it in finding the back of the net in the 29’ to open the scoring for Curacao in a 5-0 win over the U.S. Virgin Islands. With a Gold Cup berth in sight, Curacao took the field for matchday three against Guadeloupe and a brace from Janga (77’, 90’) was one of the key elements in a 6-0 home triumph over Les Gwada Boys. Nazon was just as lethal in front of net in CNLQ, yet unlike Janga, who appeared in all four CNLQ matches for Curacao, Nazon made just three appearances in CNLQ, therefore averaging two goals per game. Nazon enjoyed a blistering start to CNLQ by producing a five-goal effort in Haiti’s opening 13-0 win over Sint Maarten with goals in the 19’, 35’, 42’, 61’ and 64’. While Nazon did not play in Haiti’s 2-1 win at Saint Lucia on matchday two, he was back in action on matchday three, helping Haiti to a 2-0 win at Nicaragua. Nazon then capped his superb CNLQ performance with the opening goal in the 27’, as Haiti topped Cuba 2-1 to claim a first-place finish in CNLQ with a 4W-0D-0L record, scoring six of Haiti’s 19 goals. For both players, they were performances that will forever be part of Concacaf history.
