ROAD TOWN, British Virgin Islands – The British Virgin Islands hung on to earn a 1-1 draw with a strong Cayman Islands side on Friday afternoon at the A.O Shirley Recreation Ground in Road Town, British Virgin Islands in Group D of League C of the 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League
Much like Anguilla’s draw with Dominica on Thursday, the result marked the first ever Nations League point for the British Virgin Islands.
The British Virgin Islands applied good pressure in the opening stages of the match via set pieces, but ultimately failed to convert any of them.
The Caymans managed a few shots but were mostly kept in check in the first half, which ended goalless.
The second half yielded the game’s two goals, beginning with the home side striking first in the 62nd minute on a nifty header from captain Kavon Caesar.
But the Cayman Islands were not going to be denied an equalizer. It came in the 82nd minute when substitute Syrus Conolly found the back of the net to knot things up at 1-1.
Tyler Forbes had a chance from a tough angle in the 88th minute to find a winner for the home side, but missed high, resulting in a share of the points.
The result is one that the British Virgin Islands will try to duplicate, and one the Cayman Islands will try to avenge, when the teams meet again on June 6 in George Town.
