Team Profile

The Saint Lucia men’s national team went into the final three matches of the inaugural Concacaf Nations League knowing what it needed to do. Protect home turf, and a spot League B next time around was safe.

It was a difficult demand, though, after a tough schedule that saw Saint Lucia hit the road for the first three matches of the group. After a loss to El Salvador, the team bounced back with a victory over the Dominican Republic at the Darren Sammy Cricket Ground in Gros Islet. Yet, Montserrat was able to get another victory, and Saint Lucia were relegated to League C.

Saint Lucia has been a Concacaf member since 1986, with a third-place finish in the 1991 Caribbean Cup signaling a positive start to life in the region for the Eastern Caribbean nation. But it has been a challenge to sustain that success, even with innovative moves like partnership with clubs in the United Kingdom and seeking out players who play in other Concacaf nations.

The next CNL campaign will give Saint Lucia a good opportunity to work on what it has accomplished in the past and seek to overcome the challenges that will pop up on the way to success.
