United States

Team Profile

The United States will be out to defend their Gold Cup title in their 17th tournament appearance after taking the 2021 Final versus long-time rivals Mexico, 1-0.

The dramatic extra time victory for the U.S. was the country’s seventh Gold Cup crown, bringing them to within one of matching Mexico’s all-time mark of eight Gold Cup titles.

The U.S. are just one of two countries to have participated in every edition of the Gold Cup and boast some of the tournament’s most prestigious team and individual records.

No team has played more Gold Cup games than the U.S. (85) and no team has been in more Gold Cup Finals than the U.S. (12). The U.S. also have the most victories in the history of the tournament with 67, while former FW Landon Donovan is the Gold Cup’s all-time top scorer with 18 goals, followed closely behind by former teammate Clint Dempsey (13).

By virtue of their first-place finish in Group D of League A of the 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League, the U.S. will return to defend their title on home soil.

A new generation of U.S. players introduced themselves to the world at last year’s 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and many of the same players who starred for the U.S. at that tournament will be on display in the Gold Cup.

There should also be a healthy presence of U.S. players new to the international scene who stand to feature in the Gold Cup, while the likes of DF Walker Zimmerman and MF Kellyn Acosta are likely to provide veteran leadership to a squad seeking to make history and become just the second U.S. team to defend a Gold Cup crown.

The U.S. are in Group A where they will square off with Jamaica and Nicaragua, in addition to either Curacao, Saint Kitts and Nevis, French Guiana or Sint Maarten from the Gold Cup Prelims.
