SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain – Mexico international Carlos Vela underwent successful surgery on Monday to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, his club Real Sociedad announced in a statement.
The 25-year-old suffered the injury early in Saturday’s 4-1 La Liga loss at Real Madrid.
Dr. Mikel Sanchez conducted the operation, which will keep Vela hospitalized for the evening.
After he is discharged, the 37-time capped forward will start the recovery process at the sporting facilities of Zubieta. Though no time frame has been given for a return to competitive play, the injury typically requires up to eight weeks of rehabilitation.
In June and July, Mexico will be participating in the Copa America and CONCACAF Gold Cup.
