ZURICH -- Mexico head coach Juan Carlos Osorio has received a six-game suspension for abuse of match officials during his side’s third-place match against Portugal in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup on July 2.
FIFA announced the sanctions Friday, stating that the Colombian had acted aggressively towards those officials while also using offensive language. He was ejected for those actions..
“As a result, and given the gravity of the incident, Mr. Osorio is to be suspended for six official matches and has also been sanctioned with a warning and a fine of CHF 5,000 (US$5,180),” the official FIFA statement detailed.
The suspension means Osorio will miss the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup. If Mexico is eliminated at any point, he would serve the remaining games of his suspension in the next official matches. Mexico is scheduled to face Panama (September 1, home) and Costa Rica (September 5, away) in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying after the Gold Cup.
Mexico will open defense of its Gold Cup title on Sunday against Group C rival El Salvador in San Diego, California.
